...There's no place like home, right?
It's been a while since Serenade returned back to their secret HQ, finally seeing the familiar faces of her brethren from the war that happened to survive...as well as some new faces. Of course, Serenade never socialized with any of her allies, so she just knew them...and they only knew her. That was all that was required. Petty things like "friendship" and such weren't things she was interested in, nor was she programmed to engage in such things. She was reborn for the sole purpose of one thing: Carrying out the goals of her masters. And that meant eliminating everything standing as either an obstacle or a target. If her masters order her to lead a force to destroy an entire city, then it wasn't a problem...wait a minute. She already did that.
How could she forget, really? It was where she made one of the worst mistakes in her life: Left a target alive. And that same human continues to live today. Failing to eliminate every single life in that remote city was unacceptable, even if the human in question's existence didn't interfere with the goal of her masters. Not only that, but she finally got that large scar he inflicted on her fragile body with that large shuriken...thing repaired that happened recently. That only made getting rid of him much more difficult now that he can fight back. But it's the result of being born as a sinful creature. She's torn apart and utterly destroyed lives while programmed not to feel a thing about the aftermath...and yet as of late, her malfunction seems to love making her do the opposite of what she stands for. She still has yet to go in for repairs on her control chip...that for some reason, "pride" keeps getting in the way. She wanted to fight this malfunction with her own willpower to return to the 100% killing machine she was meant to be.
But her return home wasn't just for reminiscing on her past sins and regrets...she received an order to relay all of the outside activities of the world to one of her masters, which she had just finished as she stood in front of a large desk and chair, which was turned completely around and facing a large screen as the darkness within the room completely cloaked his identity.
"...I see. Excellent work, P-003." the man said, referring to Serenade by her prototype identification. "I'll admit...even with our maintenance and recovery, we still can't execute anything huge at the moment. We'll have to cripple the hunters from the inside to halt their own recovery process to give us time...but there's no clear way to do that without getting you destroyed and us being foiled in the process. After all, your original abilities and functions are still required to be sealed to prevent this as well...and no one knows the fate of our other elite Bio-roids either. This is quite the mess..."
In truth, Serenade didn't even care why she was trying to help her masters with their goal, just that she was willing to serve and nothing more. Even if she's just a pawn in their game to get what they desire, she lacked the right to defy due to being indebted to them for taking care of a prototype such as herself. When she thought about it that way, then the rest didn't matter.
"...However, there's nothing we can do for now. I have a task for you to perform, but I need to attend a strategy meeting soon, so report back to my office within two hours. Dismissed."
"...Acknowledged."
...And just like that, she was done. There wasn't much for her to even do around here to kill two whole hours but maybe take a break by going into sleep mode in a pod...or just take a look around the HQ to get re-adjusted to it. Who knows when wartime will break out again.

The HQ wasn't really all that different from what she remembered it...could have sworn that the place got a little bigger though, as she was walking through an unfamiliar hallway. It was completely possible that they could have constructed some new areas in her time away...though when did they have the time to engage in such an activity while recovering from failure of the war? Well, it didn't matter. While their base wasn't as large as the Maverick Hunter's, it was still a pretty impressively large structure. Not to mention that it was heavily fortified to where some of her comrades were bold enough to state that their HQ was impregnable. The placed needed to be heavily guarded anyway in case the hunters, or anyone for that matter, build up the nerve and guts to travel down into this wasteland of an uncharted territory.
Trying to think of more pleasant things, Serenade realized by walking further that an automatic door was there opened and suspended. Someone must have deactivated the sensory, so she was curious enough to walk on through until she was in a large computer room. She'd never seen so many monitors all in one big room, as it was safe in assuming this was a new room that served as a holding for their ever-expanding database. As she examined the room, she noticed one of their bio-roid scientists was there working on the main computer; the largest one in the room before approaching him, though not really saying a word as she examined the contents of the monitor. Startled, the scientist jumped before turning around, but sighed with relief.
"Phew...don't do that, Serenade...as much as I know you can't help it." He sighed a bit, but smiled. "But it's been a whole year, hasn't it? Welcome back!"
She glanced at him for a couple of seconds looking as lifeless as ever before looking back on the monitor. She was always like that around everyone. Since Serenade never "connected" well with anyone, the friendly greeting of her comrade just kind of blew over her shoulder. But as the scientist spoke, that wasn't her fault. It was just the way she was programmed...though this would have been the perfect time for Serenade to tell him about the malfunction in her control chip. However, something kept getting in her way that prevented her from broaching the subject...but not like it mattered now. The contents of the monitor actually raised her interest.
"...This is the past footage from the spy drones." She plainly stated, as there was a recording of two bio-roids in the war fighting against a squad of Maverick Hunters.
"Yup. Thanatos wanted me to collect some of the past footage for him so he could use it for the meeting between the Masters. He should be coming by any second now, seeing as the meeting's supposed to be starting--" The scientist was cut off as more steps were heard and entered the room. The moment Serenade turned her head, he was already standing next to her...a reploid-like bio-roid clad in a golden armor design. How did he...?
"Ahh! Come on! You too, Than? You and Serenade sure do like sneaking up on people!" The scientist sighing with relief again and was now downloading the data he collected on a small chip. The newcomer approached as he was watching the battle recording on the screen. Serenade herself was actually a little thrown off balance for a second. Hardly anyone could actually surprise her given how she wasn't programmed as such, but Thanatos definitely could do it. Like her, the elite bio-roid hardly spoke a word and it was already hard to tell what he was thinking since his face was covered completely with his helmet's design. But from what she remembered about the battle commander was that he was an absolute terror on the battlefield. Even when she had all of her own original abilities unsealed, her combat specs never really matched with Thanatos's...not even close. They say he was built solely for killing the Class S Hunters while commanding the entire army, hence his off-the-scale specs.
"All done!" The scientist passed the data chip onto the tall bio-roid as he immediately retrieved it. He stared downward to Serenade, who he met direct eye contact with her for a few moments before simply walking off and exited.

"He sure is a scary dude, that Thanatos. Of course, his name does mean 'death'..." The scientist commented after the enigma that was the golden bio-roid exited the room, rubbing his chin as if he was in a thinking position. "If only he didn't take on some unexpected damage during the war, he may have been able to turn the tables for us dramatically. They say he annihilated an entire squad of Class A Hunters all on his own, but I guess there's a large gap between Class A and S in terms of skill, since three of the latter rank were able to defeat him..."
Serenade merely stood there and said nothing as her usual, but their commander was definitely a force to be reckoned with. As she recalled from the history of what all went down, Thanatos managed to disable two of those three S hunters into critical condition, but the one they call Zero managed to fend off and defeat him in the end since the commander was already damaged from taking down the other two. In a sense, he nearly completed the single purpose he was created for since those three are the only ones of their rank at the moment...but who knows when more worthy adversaries will advance to that level...and that'd just make the commander's job more tedious if more extremely skilled individuals came into the picture. All the more reason for them all to evolve further so Thanatos doesn't have to severely risk being destroyed again. But the day a full-scale war would break out again wouldn't likely happen any time soon, so she didn't know why their masters were in such a hurry to make a move. Impatience perhaps?
But that was enough of this conversation, which Serenade looked back to the scientist for a second before exiting the room herself. As she traveled back the way she came, she pondered on what sort of new task her masters have assigned her now. Maybe infiltration again? But where? Surely she couldn't attempt to sneak into the Far West Hunter HQ again, as the last time she was assigned to do that, she nearly got herself caught and the risk was just too great to proceed. That was one thing she had to give their enemies credit for...they sure did have a nearly impregnable facility just like their own. Though it always amazed her how they could build and protect a stronghold perfectly while their exterior and cities can't be protected in the same manner. In the end, if they managed to decimate everything, all that would stand in their way is the HQ of the hunters worldwide.
...However two hours had still yet to pass, as she assumed that would be how long the meeting would last. Guess all she could do now was go place herself in a capsule to rejuvenate her energy for the next two hours. The maintenance room wasn't too far away from her current location. As she walked through the hallways, she saw more familiar faces this time. Some stopped and waved or greeted her even. She even managed to wave back or even talk to them for a couple of minutes surprisingly. Maybe she's spent too much time on the surface and being surrounded by so many foreign people and their habits that it's also affected her control chip. But on her way, she finally reached the maintenance room, which was actually deserted with only one scientist in there that operated the capsules.
After having one already set up and ready for her to use, the bio-roid laid flat on her back inside the machine as the her brother-by-species pressed the button on the exterior of the capsule to close it for her. As it would likely take a little bit for her body to go into sleep mode on it's own, she wondered if this little maintenance would help stabilize her control chip...even if that's asking for a bit too much. She did stubbornly decide to face the problem all on her own, but if it was a simple fix all along, then she wouldn't really have the right to complain. Just thinking about all of the things she's done that deviated from how she was programmed caused a slight pain in her head. It's because of those foreign feelings that she felt a burning and painful feeling in her chest as she recalled the acts of violence she's committed in the past...was it actually regret?
Bleh, she needs to sleep...

As her vision began to blur and the apparent static within her view, it seemed like her little power nap was over as the hatch of the maintenance pod automatically retracted. To say that was nearly two hours of being deactivated, it felt...shorter. Oh well. Not like she was expecting a long nap anyway, as the meeting between the masters had likely concluded by how long she was out and the one who personally issued her commands should be back in his office by now...which meant it was finally time for the next assignment. Hopefully it wasn't anything completely dull like what she's been doing ever since the war ended...just standing around, doing nothing but observing human and reploid activity. Really, how much more information they required on their enemies before they issue another attack? She already told them that the hunters were still recovering like they were, so they may just want to know more about their personal lives...great.
Rising from her pod, she just wanted to get this over with. Chances are, the next assignment was just going to be as she fears, so no use thinking something big will happen. She was greeted again by the bio-roid doctor who put her to sleep before. Before she could just walk pass him without saying anything as usual, she had that pain in her head again, forcing her to cover her forehead like she always does.
"...Serenade? Are you feeling symptoms of instability from the maintenance? Not to worry. It'll settle down soon." The doctor spoke as though he wasn't really too concerned. Apparently, it was normal to feel a little odd after waking from a short sleep mode period. But Serenade knew this was no mere after effect from sleeping. She's always felt like this when she...thought about her past killings. Though she wasn't really thinking of something like that...so why? However, the headache began pounding as it seemed to get worse with every breath she took...an unusual response. It normally died down right about now, but the pain was excruciating...to the point where it caused her to scream out in agony while having both hands clenching her head now, falling to her knees as she's never experienced true "pain" before. Nothing, even inflicted battle wounds caused her to actually have a reaction to pain, but this was different somehow.
She couldn't even hear the doctor speaking to her anymore. It seemed like countless images popped into her mind as her eyes were shut from the pain. They all were from her battles. Nothing but images of her mercilessly slaying her foes...and others without remorse. It seemed like each killing blow she remembered inflicting to these people caused her head to pound every time, her screams becoming louder with each passing moment. It seemed like it was going on forever, as some of the visions of the past kept repeating themselves...especially of the human she didn't kill...the only one she didn't finish off. Eventually, she collapsed on the floor, though was still conscious. There was nothing but black now, as it seemed like all the recall of memories had subsided for now. As she laid there panting out of exhaustion, she felt the bio-roid doctor take hold of her shoulders to help her up as she slowly creaked her eyes open.
"Can you hear me, Serenade?" He kept saying as he shook her repeatedly. Eventually, she found the power to snap herself out of it and broke free from the doctor, standing on her feet as she rested her hand on her forehead despite not feeling anymore pain. "...Never in my short life have I've ever seen or heard you scream in serious pain. I've always thought your programming was incapable of it..." The doctor continued as he laid his hand on her shoulder, actually concerned now unlike earlier. "You should stay here and undergo some extensive maintenance. It's dangerous to leave you like thi--"
"...I do not have that luxury. Master awaits..." She plainly stated as she let her arm fall and walked out the room, others who were by the door staring at her, for they obviously hear her screaming. Other than needing to hurry over to her master, she knew that feeling despite it being more severe this time. It was the sins of her past coming back to haunt her...but why? She was programmed to kill people without remorse or objection, so why do these heinous crimes continue to plague her as if they were going against a moral code? That same moral that reploids stuck to? Was she actually...regretting her past? Well, she shouldn't. Otherwise, she shouldn't even be here. She wanted to fight this issue all on her own, not with the aid of someone else. She didn't even understand that feeling. Hmm...maybe she just needed to kill some people to shape her back up?
