Roy sighed. Not much was happening to him lately. At first, being a Maverick Hunter had been exciting and dangerous. Now it was routine. He walked through the mall, off duty, as his black leather trenchcoat flapped in the light breeze of the bodies walking past him. He wore the same things near every day, granted not the exact same clothing, just some variation of it. Black trench coat to hide his armor plated chest, usually over a baggy black shirt. Black jeans. Black boots.
He liked black.
He walked through the mall, looking for nothing in particular. He often spent his downtime like this, looking around a random city while he was off duty. He had traveled plenty while he was, for lack of a better word, human. He was armed, as always, but off duty. He only had the weapons integrated into his arms and his pistol on him. Random J-pop and J-rock floated through the speakers, and a few ganguro girls (Human woman participating in a centuries old fashion trend, Google it.) were sitting under one of the escalators, smoking.
He toggled through the languages in his universal translator, a device embedded in his throat and operated by his brain waves, the menu taking up a small portion of his vision in his left eye before he selected Japanese, and the menu closed. He smiled lightly. His father had been some sort of genius. Shame he was dead.
His stomach growled, one of the few human organs he still had, letting him know it was time to eat. He walked to the food court, which was a mere twenty feet away, and stood in line at a takoyaki stand. The man running it looked a bit worried, hands under the counter, reaching for something. He had seen the pistol hanging on Roy's hip as he opened hos coat to grab his wallet.
"Maverick hunter, don't worry."
Roy flashed his badge and smiled reassuringly, and the guy surprisingly gave him the takoyaki on the house, after explaining that maverick hunters had saved his daughter about a week ago. Roy smiled, explained that it was thier job to do things like that, and he really should pay, but the man was having none of it. Roy shifted awkwardly, and accepted the takoyaki, sitting down to eat it at one of the nearby tables.

'I love Mavericks!' She thought as she practically skipped through the mall, bags of various goods hanging from her clearly robotic arms. She wasn't particularly fond of the dresses and such that normal humans and cyborgs liked, sticking instead to her rather normal looking chassis as she walked about the mall. No, the things she bought were more for atmosphere.
Books, vases, nick-knacks, just little things to decorate her apartment with. And what could she attribute this shopping spree to? Why the Mavericks who were causing trouble last week! She didn't particularly care for the Mavericks who went for the kill and destroy aspects, but they had their uses. For one, they made excellent distractions for a quick theft. For two, they made excellent patsies while she got away. Who would ever believe the rampaging and murdering Mavericks that they didn't steal or destroy something in the middle of their crime? It really made her job easier, and she'd gotten away with a lot this time too. She usually went for easily liquified goods, made them harder to track...just in case.
It had been an easy getaway, and she always savored those. No complications, no issues, just clean cash.
"Maverick Hunter, don't worry."
Or there was that. Her ears picked that up and zeroed in on the back of the man who'd spoken. He was buying...no, he was using his Hunter status to get a meal for free. Hah, and they called her a thief.
Still, in her line of work it was always good to be more cautious then needed. One never knew what people like this knew, and she wanted to know just how far he was poking his nose before she got out of here.
Or she could just ignore the Hunter and leave, before she risked exposing something by accident.
...
But where was the fun in that? So she pulled up a chair at the table next to him, setting her many bags down on the floor and relaxing into the chair for a moment. Hmmm, maybe a drink to cool her off? The recent years had tried to remove the differences between reploids and organics, which of course went first to appearances. So they actually had things here she could drink, the wonders of modern science.

The cyborg chewed his takoyaki thoughtfully, musing over how he was going to repay the man at the stand. He had an idea, one that would set him back quite a bit financially, but hell, he didn't much care. Accepting a free meal and just taking it would make him look bad, and feel worse.
He smirked, looking back and forth to see if anyone was looking at him. The mall was surprisingly empty, the classical music piping through the PA system probably wasn't helping, either. Roy preferred classical music of a different era, himself. The ancient tunes of a genre known as "Power metal". But that was beside the point. Roy took out his wallet and he thumbed through the money, taking out enough to fully upgrade his assault rifle, get it refitted, and then he vanished.
He had activated his cloaking mechanism.
Silently stepping over to the takoyaki stand, he dropped the money into the tip jar. It was enough to keep them on their feet if business went bad or something. Anything of the sort, really. Roy had been saving up for weeks to get his rifle refitted, but he felt this was a better use of his money.
Silently stepping back to the table, he decloaked in his seat as if he had never left it, and resumed eating.
A transmission came through on the imbedded com unit in his ear, and he smiled, reaching up an scratching at his black goatee.. He was off duty for an extra day? Might as well spend it in Tokyo.

Kai had been watching this Hunter out of the corner of her eye, when all of a sudden, he vanished. She was quite familiar with the concept of vanishing from sight, so she did a quick internal diagnostic. No...no signs of any malfunctioning of the optics, which meant that he'd just cloaked...but for what reason? Was he perhaps on to her? No, that was impossible, she'd been to careful. She never did anything shady in her base form, it was how she'd avoided detection for this long.
And then, he was back. Kai eyed him suspiciously...he'd done something. Nobody would cloak and then de-cloak if they weren't trying to accomplish something away from prying eyes. So what had this Hunter done that he didn't want people to see?
She observed the surrounding area for a moment more, not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Hmmm...she surreptitiously placed her hand on the underside of her table, feeling for a listening device or something of the sort. Feeling nothing, she began going through options of what this stealthy little Hunter had been trying to accomplish.
But she ran up empty, so she decided to be brash. Why not? After all, she needed more information on what he knew, and what better way to do so then to make him work for his cover?
She glanced over to the next table, eying him suspiciously as she spoke up. "So, do you always use fancy Hunter equipment to show off, or are we just special?" She quipped. People tended to drop their guard when they were emotional, and there were two ways to best do that. Flirtatious or antagonistic.
And he really wasn't her type.

The classical music continued to pipe through the speaker system of the mall, and Roy smiled lightly, eating the takoyaki that tasted so much better now that it had been paid for. And then some. At this point, little miss nosy hadn't come up to him yet, and he mused lightly about his life in general. Little thoughts about little things.
And then the fire nation reploid started trying to antagonize him. She sure had a mouth on her, and he almost laughed, but that would have likely offended her. Although some people he didn't worry about offending, as far as he knew she was a law abiding citizen. He didn't know she was a thief, or whatever she was, because petty theft wasn't really a part of his jurisdiction. He usually dealt with much higher class crimes.
That was when the owner of the Takoyaki stand noticed the tip jar.
"Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa. Where the hell did all this money come from?!", the man exclaimed. He clutched his chest for a moment, and seemed to wobble staring at it. He quickly took the tip jar off the counter as he regained himself, and yelled out. "Thank you, whoever did this thank you!"
Roy simply ignored the lady reploid trying to antagonize him, and ate his takoyaki. After a minute or so, if he was still there, he would look up and say, "That guy makes some damned good takoyaki. You one of the new reploids that can eat? If so, I totally recommend it."
He would pull a light novel out of his trenchcoat afterwards, and begin to read.

Kai watched the scene unfold and rolled her eyes. Ugh, what a pig. She was surprised he'd even bothered to cloak before he put a fortune of money in the jar, as if it weren't already obvious who'd done it. And that was probably exactly as he liked it. He gets to look humble and respectable, but he does good simply to soak up the fame and rewards that comes from the masses. That cocky arrogance and false benevolence, what the Hunter's were really like.
"What, is that supposed to impress me? An act of 'kindness' for all to see?" Perhaps he was being nice, but the scene was just too odd. To get it for free, and then give many times more what you should have? If he'd put in what he'd owed, ok he could get away with that. But to make such a show of his giving, that just reeked of insincerity...
or madness.
Without another word she grabbed her bags, stood up, and headed for the mall's exit. She still had a day or two to go shopping in Japan, and there were no lack of places to spend money here. She could afford to find a place with a better atmosphere.
Just as well anyway. On her way out she spied another reploid that looked like it had absolutely no business being in a shopping mall.
